We reviewed 15 Runway alternatives for explainer work. Compare cost per finished minute, presenters, licensed models and open weights before you switch.
Quick answer: HeyGen (4.8/5) is the best Runway alternative for teams that need finished, script-accurate video, because Avatar V delivers an approved script for up to 30 minutes and translates it into 177+ languages in one project. Best cinematic value: Kling AI. Best Veo 3.1 access: Google Flow. Best commercially safe option: Adobe Firefly.
Teams migrating to HeyGen from Runway tell us a version of the same story every week. Gen-4.5 gave them gorgeous B-roll, and Aleph saved more than one reshoot.
Then the brief changed: a 3-minute product explainer, a script legal had approved word for word, and versions for Germany and Japan. Runway made beautiful short shots, but it could not deliver that explainer. Runway's own reviews suggest they weren't alone:
- Credits that cover under a minute: Standard's 625 credits buy about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per second
- No rollover below Max: Standard and Pro credits expire at every monthly refresh
- Premium partner models cost more: Veo 3 with audio runs 40 credits per second inside Runway
- Missed prompts that still bill, a theme G2 reviewers raise repeatedly, and more.
This list covers the tools those teams moved to instead. Every tool is scored on 3 criteria:
- Cost per finished minute, not per generated second
- Script fidelity, meaning an approved script delivered word for word by a consistent presenter
- Fit with the edit, from export formats and plugins to API access for production pipelines
WHY TRUST US?
Full disclosure: we make HeyGen, and we ranked it #1. To keep that honest, every price, plan limit and release date below was checked against vendor pages, changelogs and press coverage in October 2026. Leaderboard figures come from public rankings, user complaints come from G2 and Trustpilot reviews, and HeyGen benchmark figures are labeled as HeyGen's own. Where a competitor beats HeyGen, the scores say so.
Runway alternatives compared
Runway is a generation and VFX studio, so we compared alternatives on what a finished deliverable costs, not on clip quality alone.
Ratings combine published pricing and credit math (checked October 2026), feature and spec comparisons, public leaderboard results, and recurring themes in G2 and Trustpilot reviews, scored on the four sub-categories shown in each section.
Best all-around Runway alternatives
These three cover the most of what Runway users make: product films, B-roll, explainers and image-to-video work. HeyGen finishes script-driven video end to end, Kling matches Runway's motion at a lower price, and Luma brings native HDR.
#1 HeyGen: Best for script-accurate explainers with a presenter

Our rating: 4.8/5
- Output quality: 4.6/5
- Ease of use: 4.9/5
- Languages and localization: 5.0/5
- Value for money: 4.7/5
Pricing: Free plan available; paid plans from $24 per month (billed annually) or $29 month to month
Standout feature: Avatar V presenters that deliver an approved script word for word, for up to 30 minutes in one pass
What's the difference between HeyGen and Runway? Runway is a generative media studio where you direct short shots and restyle existing footage. HeyGen produces script-accurate, presenter-led video up to 30 minutes long, translates it into 177+ languages with lip sync, and runs leading third-party models for B-roll in the same project.
Take a typical brief: a 3-minute product explainer with a legal-approved script, a recurring presenter and one 10-second hero shot. On Runway, the presenter means driving a generated character with Act-Two or lip sync, then stitching dozens of short clips into an edit.
HeyGen handles the explainer as one render. The whole script runs through text to video, with the presenter delivering every approved line in a single pass of up to 30 minutes.
A third-party model can generate the hero shot inside the same project. For teams generating scenes programmatically, HeyGen's own model, HeyGen Video, launched September 30, 2026 on the API, producing 5 to 15 second clips with sound from a prompt or references.
One identity holds for the full runtime. Presenters come from 1,100+ stock avatars or a Digital Twin, and the AI avatar generator lets you change Looks without retraining the face.
Localization is where Runway users feel the gap most. Workday localizes each training video into 10 to 15 languages with HeyGen, and trivago localized across 30 markets, saving 3 to 4 months of post-production.
The trivago case study details how one master video became 30 market versions without new shoots. Across customers, HeyGen reports up to 50% less post-production time.
HeyGen pros:
- Approved scripts delivered word for word, up to 30 minutes in one pass
- Avatar V holds one identity across scenes, angles and Looks
- Translation into 177+ languages with lip sync and voice preserved
- Third-party B-roll models and captions in the same export
- Avatar III videos, dubbing and stock content unlimited on paid plans
- API, MCP connector and 50 listed integrations for production pipelines
HeyGen cons:
- HeyGen Video, the new scene model, is API-only at launch, with web app access announced but not yet dated
Choose HeyGen if: your Runway shots keep needing a presenter, an approved script or a translated version before they can ship.
What's new in HeyGen: HeyGen launched HeyGen Video (heygen-video-1) on September 30, 2026, its first general-purpose video model, built on MiniMax H3 and post-trained by HeyGen, priced from $0.01 per second through October.
Available for: Web app, iOS, Android, and API
#2 Kling AI: Best for cinematic motion per dollar

Our rating: 4.5/5
- Output quality: 4.7/5
- Ease of use: 4.4/5
- Languages and localization: 4.2/5
- Value for money: 4.8/5
Pricing: Free plan with 66 credits a day; paid plans from $6.99 per month
Standout feature: Kling 3.0's multi-shot storyboard with native audio, 4K output and Motion Brush
What's the difference between Kling AI and Runway? Runway now resells Kling models inside its own app and MCP, so Kling is already part of many Runway workflows. Buying from Kling directly avoids Runway's credit rate and gets new Kling releases first, though you lose Runway's editing toolchain.
Kling's free tier is unusually generous: 66 credits a day, no card required. Kling 3.0 Turbo, released June 17, 2026, lists audio-included rates from ¥0.8 per second at 720p, roughly $0.11.
The trade-offs are queues and gated tiers. Lower plans wait longer at peak hours, and early access to new releases has sat behind the Ultra tier, priced at $127.99 at launch and $159.99 on renewal.
Kling AI pros:
- Motion and physics on par with the best models in this list
- Native audio and multi-shot generation
- 66 free daily credits with no card required
- Paid plans start at a fraction of Runway's per-second cost
Kling AI cons:
- No timeline editor or NLE plugins of its own
- Peak-hour queues on lower tiers
Choose Kling AI over HeyGen if: your deliverable is cinematic B-roll at volume and nobody needs to speak to camera.
What's new in Kling AI: Kling released Kling 3.0 Turbo on June 17, 2026, with audio included in its per-second price and improved lip sync, alongside an upgraded Omni editing model with 4K editing.
Available for: Web app, iOS, Android, and API
#3 Luma AI: Best for HDR image-to-video and color-graded workflows

Our rating: 4.1/5
- Output quality: 4.5/5
- Ease of use: 4.3/5
- Languages and localization: 3.6/5
- Value for money: 3.9/5
Pricing: No permanent free tier on the current plans; paid plans from $30 per month (Plus), with legacy Dream Machine plans from $9.99 still documented
Standout feature: Ray3.14 generates native 16-bit HDR video for color grading
What's the difference between Luma AI and Runway? Luma generates HDR footage natively, while Runway converts SDR clips to HDR afterward with its Ruby model. Runway covers far more editing tasks; Luma focuses on image-to-video quality and, since March 2026, Agents that orchestrate text, image, video and audio.
Ray3.14 shipped in January 2026 with native 1080p output at 4x the speed of earlier versions.
Two gaps lower Luma's overall score here. Ray3 does not generate native audio, so every clip needs sound added later, and users complain they cannot buy credits à la carte without moving to a larger plan.
Luma AI pros:
- Native 16-bit HDR output that grades with camera footage
- Draft Mode for cheap previews before final renders
- Strong physical motion from a single image
- Agents orchestrate multi-step creative projects
Luma AI cons:
- No native audio on Ray3 models
- New plans start at $30 with no permanent free tier
Choose Luma AI over HeyGen if: you color-grade generated shots next to camera footage and need HDR from the source.
What's new in Luma AI: Luma launched Agents in March 2026 on its own Plus, Pro and Ultra plans at $30, $90 and $300 per month, alongside the Ray3.14 video model.
Available for: Web app, iOS, and API
HeyGen Pro Tip
Silent clips still need someone to explain what the viewer is seeing. HeyGen's AI narrator adds a voiceover to uploaded footage in any of 177+ languages, so a graded HDR sequence can ship with narration in every market.
Best Runway alternatives for premium cinematic shots
Runway now hosts several rival models inside its app and API, at its own credit rates. Going to the model makers directly is often cheaper per second and gets new versions first. These three lead the public quality leaderboards.
#4 Google Flow: Best for Veo 3.1 shots with native sound

Our rating: 4.3/5
- Output quality: 4.8/5
- Ease of use: 4.3/5
- Languages and localization: 4.1/5
- Value for money: 3.8/5
Pricing: Limited free access; Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month includes 1,000 Flow credits, and Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99
Standout feature: Veo 3.1 with native dialogue and sound, plus frames-to-video and ingredients-to-video controls
What's the difference between Google Flow and Runway? Runway runs Veo inside its own app, where Veo 3 with audio costs 40 credits per second. Flow is Google's own filmmaking tool, bundling Veo 3.1 and the newer Gemini Omni model into Google AI plans, where a Veo 3.1 Fast clip costs 20 credits on Pro.
Full quality is where Flow's value drops. Each Quality clip costs 100 credits, so Pro covers about 10 a month, and every Veo clip caps at 8 seconds, two short of a 10-second hero shot.
The higher tiers change the math considerably. Google cut AI Ultra's entry price to $99.99 after I/O 2026, with 10,000 credits, and the $199.99 tier carries 25,000 credits with cheaper video generations.
Google Flow pros:
- Veo 3.1 picture and sound quality without a reseller markup
- Reference ingredients and first and last frame control
- Bundled with Gemini, storage and other Google AI tools
- Gemini Omni adds conversational editing of generated clips
Google Flow cons:
- 8-second cap on every Veo clip
- About 10 full-quality clips a month on the Pro plan
Choose Google Flow over HeyGen if: you already pay for Google AI and need short photoreal shots with sound, with no presenter involved.
What's new in Google Flow: Google added the Gemini Omni video model to Flow after announcing it at I/O on May 19, 2026, and cut the AI Ultra entry price to $99.99.
Available for: Web app, plus the Gemini app and Gemini API
#5 Dreamina (Seedance 2.5): Best for 30-second continuous shots

Our rating: 4.3/5
- Output quality: 4.8/5
- Ease of use: 4.2/5
- Languages and localization: 4.0/5
- Value for money: 4.3/5
Pricing: Paid plan required for Seedance 2.5; Dreamina's own pricing guide puts it at about $0.097 per second on the annual Advanced plan
Standout feature: Seedance 2.5 generates up to 30 seconds in one continuous take with up to 50 reference assets
What's the difference between Dreamina and Runway? Runway added Seedance 2.5 to its developer API on September 28, 2026, with a 480p draft mode. Dreamina is ByteDance's own workspace, where Seedance 2.5 launched first, with Intelligent Edit Mode for fixing one region of a shot instead of regenerating it.
A 30-second ceiling changes how you edit. Shorter models force cuts every 8 to 15 seconds, and each cut is a chance for lighting or a face to drift. Seedance 2.5 reached second place on the LMArena image-to-video board in August 2026.
The weak spot is pricing clarity. Dreamina's plan pages quote per-second equivalents rather than a simple credit table, so budget from a test month before committing.
Dreamina pros:
- Longest continuous shots among the models in this list
- Up to 50 image, video and audio references per project
- Targeted edits instead of full re-renders
- Native audio and consistent characters in the same model
Dreamina cons:
- Plan pricing is harder to forecast than per-second API rates
- No timeline editor or NLE plugins
Choose Dreamina over HeyGen if: your projects are long cinematic sequences built from references, with nobody delivering a script to camera.
What's new in Dreamina: ByteDance launched Seedance 2.5 globally on July 31, 2026, debuting first on Dreamina with 30-second generation and 50-asset references.
Available for: Web app
HeyGen Pro Tip
A generated scene with dialogue is locked to the language you prompted it in. HeyGen's AI video translator re-voices a finished scene into 177+ languages with lip sync, so one expensive generation can serve every market.
#6 Hailuo AI (MiniMax H3): Best for 2K clips per dollar

Our rating: 4.4/5
- Output quality: 4.6/5
- Ease of use: 4.2/5
- Languages and localization: 4.0/5
- Value for money: 4.7/5
Pricing: Daily free credits in the Hailuo app; API from $0.08 per second at 768p and $0.13 at 2K
Standout feature: MiniMax H3 produces 15-second 2K clips with stereo audio from text, image, video and audio context
What's the difference between Hailuo AI and Runway? Runway added MiniMax H3 Max to its developer API on September 3, 2026, at 480p or 768p. Going to MiniMax directly adds 2K output and the Hailuo app's daily free credits, at $0.08 per second for 768p with audio through the official API.
H3 launched on July 31, 2026 and led the LMArena image-to-video board in August at 1,489 Elo. At $0.08 per second, a 10-second clip costs about $0.80, a fraction of frontier rates elsewhere.
Full disclosure: HeyGen's own scene model, HeyGen Video, is post-trained from MiniMax H3. We note it so you can weigh our rating with that in mind.
Hailuo AI pros:
- Top image-to-video arena score in August 2026
- Audio included in a low per-second price
- 15-second clips at up to 2K
- Open weights announced for self-hosting
Hailuo AI cons:
- App plans and API billing are separate
- No editing toolchain beyond generation
Choose Hailuo AI over HeyGen if: you need the best-looking short shot per dollar and already edit elsewhere.
What's new in Hailuo AI: MiniMax launched H3 on July 31, 2026 in the Hailuo app and API, and announced its open-weights release on August 3, 2026.
Available for: Web app, iOS, Android, and API
Best Runway alternatives for commercially safe production
Brand and studio legal teams increasingly ask what a model was trained on. Runway does not market its models as licensed-data only. These two do, with different trade-offs between maturity and model quality.
#7 Adobe Firefly: Best for commercially safe generation inside Adobe workflows

Our rating: 4.2/5
- Output quality: 4.0/5
- Ease of use: 4.4/5
- Languages and localization: 4.2/5
- Value for money: 4.0/5
Pricing: Free plan with 25 credits a month; paid plans from $9.99 per month (Standard, 2,000 credits)
Standout feature: The Firefly Video Model, trained on licensed Adobe Stock and public domain content
What's the difference between Adobe Firefly and Runway? Firefly hosts Runway Gen-4.5 as one of 30+ partner models, so it can replace Runway without losing access to it. The difference is legal cover: Adobe positions its own models as commercially safe, but that positioning does not extend to partner models in the same app.
The native model caps single generations at 5 seconds, which lowers its quality score for longer shots. Firefly's web video editor, launched December 16, 2025, adds a multi-track timeline, prompt-to-edit and 4K upscaling.
Adobe added Kling 3.0 and Kling 3.0 Omni as partner models in April 2026, and the partner roster passed 30 models by mid-May. Firefly plans also include minutes of audio and video translation.
Adobe Firefly pros:
- Native model trained on licensed and public domain content
- Partner models including Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0 and Runway Gen-4.5
- Web video editor with prompt-to-edit and 4K upscaling
- Generative Extend inside Premiere Pro
Adobe Firefly cons:
- Native video model caps generations at 5 seconds
- Commercial-safety positioning excludes partner models
Choose Adobe Firefly over HeyGen if: your legal team requires licensed-data models and your editors live in Creative Cloud.
What's new in Adobe Firefly: Adobe added Kling 3.0 and Kling 3.0 Omni partner models in April 2026, taking Firefly's third-party roster past 30 models by mid-May.
Available for: Web app, iOS, Android, and inside Premiere Pro and Photoshop
HeyGen Pro Tip
Timelines handle cuts, but a changed line of dialogue usually means a reshoot. HeyGen's AI video editor regenerates the presenter's line from a script edit, so legal changes do not send you back to set.
#8 Moonvalley (Marey): Best for licensed-data video for studios

Our rating: 3.8/5
- Output quality: 4.0/5
- Ease of use: 3.8/5
- Languages and localization: 3.5/5
- Value for money: 3.8/5
Pricing: No free tier; credit packs from $14.99 for 100 credits (May 2026)
Standout feature: Marey, trained only on licensed, high-resolution footage, with camera paths, motion transfer and pose transfer
What's the difference between Moonvalley and Runway? Moonvalley sells one promise Runway does not make: a video model trained entirely on licensed footage, built for studios that must answer for training data. Runway offers far more tools and a steadier release cadence.
Marey renders 1080p at 24fps and offers the cinematographer-style controls filmmakers expect. Independent tests, however, report inconsistent motion and prompt adherence, and Moonvalley lacks localization tools.
Moonvalley's product picture is also unsettled. In June 2026, Moonvalley's research leaders and a team of engineers moved to Reka for its physical-AI effort, its ComfyUI service is deprecated, and current pricing is not clearly published on the marketing site.
Moonvalley pros:
- Training data licensed end to end
- Camera path, motion and pose transfer controls
- Built with filmmakers and studios in mind
- Available through fal.ai for API workflows
Moonvalley cons:
- Research team moved to Reka in June 2026
- Pricing not clearly published
Choose Moonvalley over HeyGen if: licensed training data is a hard contractual requirement for a studio project.
What's new in Moonvalley: In June 2026, Reka announced that Moonvalley's research leaders and a team of researchers and engineers had joined Reka's physical-AI effort.
Available for: Web app, plus API through fal.ai
Best multi-model creative suites
Some Runway users stay mainly for the menu of models. These two hubs offer an even wider menu from one balance, though neither builds a frontier video model of its own.
#9 Higgsfield: Best for camera presets across many models

Our rating: 4.0/5
- Output quality: 4.4/5
- Ease of use: 4.2/5
- Languages and localization: 3.8/5
- Value for money: 3.6/5
Pricing: No credits on the free tier; paid plans from $19 per month (Starter, 270 credits), with Plus at $59 or $47 billed annually
Standout feature: Cinema Studio camera presets and Soul ID characters across Seedance, Kling and Wan
What's the difference between Higgsfield and Runway? Runway builds its own models and wraps them in an editing toolchain. Higgsfield resells many third-party models under one credit pool with creator-friendly camera presets, but it has no public REST API and no NLE plugins.
Higgsfield credits expire on two separate clocks. Subscription credits reset at renewal and credit packs lapse after 90 days, so unused balance disappears.
Billing drives most of the public complaints. Trustpilot reviewers describe annual billing as the default checkout and refunds refused once credits were used.
Higgsfield pros:
- Camera presets produce stylized moves without manual keyframes
- Many leading models from one balance
- Soul ID keeps a character consistent across images
- Early access to new third-party models
Higgsfield cons:
- No public REST API for automation
- Credits and packs expire, with recurring billing complaints
Choose Higgsfield over HeyGen if: you make stylized social clips across many models and value presets over finished, scripted video.
What's new in Higgsfield: As of October 2026, Higgsfield's Plus and Ultra plans include seven-day Kling 3.0 windows that deduct no credits on the website.
Available for: Web app and iOS
#10 Krea: Best for node workflows with real-time image tools

Our rating: 4.2/5
- Output quality: 4.4/5
- Ease of use: 4.4/5
- Languages and localization: 3.7/5
- Value for money: 4.4/5
Pricing: Free plan with 100 compute units a day; paid plans from $9 per month (Basic), with all video models on Pro at $35
Standout feature: Node-based workflows that chain real-time image generation into third-party video models
What's the difference between Krea and Runway? Krea and Runway both offer node-based workflows, but Krea fills them with third-party video models, including Veo, Kling, Seedance, Wan and LTX-2.3, rather than its own. Krea is stronger on images; Runway is stronger on editing existing footage.
Krea's plan cards state allowances as video counts, with 5,000 units buying about 20 Seedance 2.0 videos. That makes monthly ceilings easier to forecast than Runway's per-model credit rates.
Basic reaches only selected video models, and the API bills separately in dollars. Krea's tools are English-first, with no translation step for finished video.
Krea pros:
- Real-time image canvas feeding video generation
- Node workflows across many third-party models
- Upscaling to 8K for video
- Allowances listed as video counts
Krea cons:
- Full video model access requires the $35 Pro plan
- No editing of existing footage like Runway's Aleph
Choose Krea over HeyGen if: your pipeline starts with images and you want to chain them into many video models on one canvas.
What's new in Krea: Krea added hosting for Lightricks' LTX-2.3 model on April 30, 2026, alongside its in-house Krea 2 image model.
Available for: Web app, plus a separately billed API
Best open-weight Runway alternatives for self-hosting
Runway's models are closed, and every second runs through its servers and credit rates. Open-weight models let studios run generation on their own GPUs, fine-tune on brand footage and keep client material in-house.
#11 LTX-2 (Lightricks): Best for open weights with native 4K audio

Our rating: 4.2/5
- Output quality: 4.2/5
- Ease of use: 4.0/5
- Languages and localization: 3.8/5
- Value for money: 4.6/5
Pricing: Model weights free under the LTX-2 Community License; hosted API from $0.04 per second; LTX Studio plans from $12 per month
Standout feature: LTX-2.3, a 22-billion-parameter open-weights model with synchronized audio at up to native 4K and 50fps
What's the difference between LTX-2 and Runway? Runway's models run only on Runway's servers. LTX-2.3 ships as downloadable weights that studios can run locally and fine-tune with LoRA on their own footage, though its community license adds a commercial threshold for large companies.
LTX-2.3 shipped on March 5, 2026, and Lightricks backs it with VFX-oriented tools that no other open family offers. Hosted pricing starts at $0.04 per second, the lowest first-party rate we found.
The trade-off is the setup work involved. Local runs need a capable GPU and ComfyUI familiarity, and LTX Studio's $12 Lite plan is personal use only.
LTX-2 pros:
- Open weights for local runs and LoRA fine-tuning
- Native 4K at 50fps with synchronized audio
- Lowest hosted per-second price we found
- LTX Studio offers a storyboard front end for non-technical users
LTX-2 cons:
- Commercial threshold in the community license
- Local setup demands GPU hardware and technical skill
Choose LTX-2 over HeyGen if: you need generation on your own hardware, with weights you can fine-tune, and no presenter workflow.
What's new in LTX-2: Lightricks released LTX-2.3 on March 5, 2026, its 22-billion-parameter open-weights model with native 4K and synchronized audio.
Available for: Model weights on Hugging Face, ComfyUI, API, and LTX Studio web app
#12 Wan (Alibaba): Best for instruction-based editing on a budget

Our rating: 4.1/5
- Output quality: 4.2/5
- Ease of use: 3.6/5
- Languages and localization: 3.9/5
- Value for money: 4.6/5
Pricing: Wan 2.2 weights free under Apache 2.0; Wan 2.7 through hosted APIs from $0.10 per second
Standout feature: The Wan 2.7 suite: text-to-video, image-to-video, reference-to-video and instruction-based video editing
What's the difference between Wan and Runway? Wan 2.7's VideoEdit model edits existing footage from a plain instruction, the same job Runway's Aleph does, at a lower per-second API rate. The catch is openness: public repository checks found open weights only for Wan 2.2, while 2.5 through 2.7 are API-only.
Wan 2.7 arrived in April 2026 as four models covering generation, references and editing, with audio synced inside the model. Through hosted APIs it costs $0.10 per second.
Ease of use is the weak point. Self-hosting Wan 2.2 needs GPU hardware and a node setup, and the newest versions are only reachable through third-party APIs.
Wan pros:
- Instruction-based editing of existing footage
- Reference-to-video for consistent subjects
- Apache 2.0 weights available for Wan 2.2
- Low per-second API pricing
Wan cons:
- Newest Wan versions have no open weights
- No first-party consumer app for non-technical users
Choose Wan over HeyGen if: you want Aleph-style instruction edits through an API at the lowest price and can manage your own pipeline.
What's new in Wan: Alibaba released the Wan 2.7 video suite in April 2026, adding instruction-based VideoEdit and reference-to-video alongside text and image generation.
Available for: API through Alibaba Cloud Model Studio and partners, plus Wan 2.2 weights on Hugging Face
HeyGen Pro Tip
Generated characters often need new dialogue after the edit is locked. HeyGen's AI lip sync matches a new audio track to the speaker's mouth movements, so a revised line does not mean a new generation.
Best budget Runway alternatives for social clips
Not every shot needs a frontier model. For social hooks, memes and quick B-roll, these three first-party tools cost less than Runway's Standard plan per finished second.
#13 Pika: Best for effects-driven social clips

Our rating: 4.1/5
- Output quality: 3.9/5
- Ease of use: 4.6/5
- Languages and localization: 3.6/5
- Value for money: 4.4/5
Pricing: Free plan available; paid plans from $10 per month (Standard, 700 credits)
Standout feature: Pikaffects and effect templates for fast, playful social posts
What's the difference between Pika and Runway? Pika is built for speed and playful effects rather than cinematic realism or VFX on real footage. It costs less to start and to iterate, but it cannot match Runway's editing toolchain or Gen-4.5's photorealism.
Photorealism is not the job Pika does best. Pika 2.2 ranked last of 20 models on the LMArena image-to-video board in August 2026, at 996 Elo, and there is no translation step.
The math is simple: a 10-second 1080p clip costs about 80 credits, so Standard covers 8 to 9 high-resolution clips. Pika's top plan rose from $70 to $95 a month in April 2026.
Pika pros:
- Fast, effect-driven clips for social hooks
- Free plan and a $10 entry price
- Predictable credits per clip
- API Club access to 70+ models for $10 a month
Pika cons:
- Lowest realism score among the models in this list
- No editing of existing footage
Choose Pika over HeyGen if: your content is effects and memes, and photoreal presenters never come up.
What's new in Pika: Pika launched the Pika API Club on August 4, 2026, a $10-a-month membership that gives developers one key for 70+ models.
Available for: Web app, iOS, and API
#14 PixVerse: Best for camera-controlled clips at low cost

Our rating: 4.3/5
- Output quality: 4.2/5
- Ease of use: 4.4/5
- Languages and localization: 3.9/5
- Value for money: 4.6/5
Pricing: Free daily credits (watermarked, 720p); paid plans from $8 per month
Standout feature: V6 per-second billing from 1 to 15 seconds with 20+ cinematic camera controls
What's the difference between PixVerse and Runway? PixVerse offers camera controls similar to Runway's at a far lower entry price, and its C1 model turns 3 to 9 storyboard panels into a sequence. It has no tools for editing real footage the way Aleph does.
V6 launched on March 30, 2026, with native audio and per-second billing. At 1080p it costs 18 credits per second without audio and 23 with audio.
PixVerse sat 13th on the with-audio image-to-video leaderboard in August 2026, solid but behind the leaders. PixVerse also has no translation workflow.
PixVerse pros:
- Camera presets and per-second billing at a low price
- Storyboard-to-video input in the C1 model

#15 Grok Imagine: Best for cheap API clips with voice references

Our rating: 4.3/5
- Output quality: 4.2/5
- Ease of use: 4.3/5
- Languages and localization: 3.9/5
- Value for money: 4.6/5
Pricing: No free tier; API at $0.08 per second for Video 1.5, with consumer access through paid Grok subscriptions
Standout feature: Video 1.5 accepts up to seven image references plus a voice reference for consistent speech
What's the difference between Grok Imagine and Runway? Grok Imagine is a low-cost generator with one-pass audio, while Runway is a full studio with editing tools. Grok's voice reference keeps a character's voice consistent across clips, something Runway handles through separate custom voices on Pro.
Video 1.5 launched on June 16, 2026 as image-to-video only. A July 31 update added text-to-video, native 1080p, up to seven image references and voice references, with clips from 1 to 15 seconds.
At $0.08 per second, a 10-second clip costs $0.80. The developer publishes no verifiable comparative benchmarks, so judge quality on your own prompts.
Grok Imagine pros:
- Low per-second pricing with audio included
- Voice references keep a character's voice consistent
- Up to seven image references per generation
- Clip lengths from 1 to 15 seconds
Grok Imagine cons:
- No free tier for video
- No published comparative benchmarks
Choose Grok Imagine over HeyGen if: you generate short voiced clips through an API at volume and handle editing elsewhere.
What's new in Grok Imagine: A July 31, 2026 update to Video 1.5 added text-to-video, native 1080p, up to seven image references and voice references.

Find the best Runway alternative for your team
If you're on the hunt for apps similar to Runway, any one of the above will suffice. The choice should be dictated by your team's structure and needs:
- Cost per finished minute: price the full deliverable, including retakes and stitching, rather than the per-second rate
- Script fidelity: check whether a presenter can deliver an approved script word for word and stay the same person throughout
- Fit with the edit: confirm export formats, plugins and API access for the pipeline you already run
Some teams should pick something other than HeyGen. Kling AI makes sense for cinematic B-roll at volume on a tight budget. Adobe Firefly suits brands whose legal teams require licensed-data models. LTX-2 and Wan fit studios that want generation on their own GPUs.
For most teams, HeyGen stands out due to its combination of:
- Script-accurate presenters that hold one identity for up to 30 minutes
- B-roll from leading third-party models in the same project, plus HeyGen's own scene model on the API
- Translation into 177+ languages with lip sync, without new shoots
HeyGen's free plan lets you test everything described here. Start there.
FAQs
What is the best Runway alternative?
HeyGen is the best Runway alternative, rated 4.8/5 in our review, because it delivers an approved script with one presenter for up to 30 minutes and translates it into 177+ languages. Kling AI (4.5/5) is the best value for cinematic shots, and Hailuo AI (4.4/5) offers the best 2K clips per dollar.
Is HeyGen cheaper than Runway?
HeyGen is cheaper for finished explainers. Runway Standard costs $12 per month billed annually and buys about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5, while HeyGen Creator costs $24 per month billed annually and renders videos up to 30 minutes. For raw B-roll, Hailuo at $0.08 per second and Kling from $6.99 undercut both.
Can I keep my Premiere Pro and After Effects workflow?
Yes, if you pick the right tool. Adobe Firefly works inside Premiere Pro through Generative Extend, and LTX-2 and Wan run in ComfyUI pipelines. HeyGen exports MP4 files, including transparent-background presenter videos through the API, that drop onto any timeline. Pika and Grok Imagine have no editor plugins.
What happens to my Runway projects and credits when I switch?
Download every generation before you cancel, because Standard and Pro credits expire at each monthly refresh, and only Max rolls credits over once. Custom voices and Workflows do not transfer, so rebuild automations through HeyGen's API or ComfyUI. Prompts and reference images move freely as files and text.
Which alternative can restyle footage like Runway Aleph?
Wan 2.7 VideoEdit and Kling 3.0 Omni come closest, both editing existing clips from instructions, with Kling's Omni upgrade supporting 4K editing. Adobe Firefly offers prompt-to-edit in its web editor. HeyGen does not restyle footage, but its Speech Cleanup rebuilds real footage after removing filler words, with no jump cuts.
Which tool is best for adding a presenter to Runway B-roll?
HeyGen is the best tool for adding a presenter, since you can upload Runway B-roll into AI Studio and place an Avatar V presenter over it. A Digital Twin works as a reusable AI spokesperson across every video. Grok Imagine's voice references suit short voiced characters, while Luma and Wan have no presenter workflow.
